Five sculptors' models of their proposed statue designs were on display in August
and September at the temporary home of the Worcester Public Library at 160 Fremont St.
Also, photos of the models appeared at Tatnuck Bookseller & Sons and other locations in
Worcester during August. Hundreds of people cast ballots for their favorites, and more
than 150 ballots were cast online. The five artists, finalists chosen from a pool of 60 applicants,
shared their visions for the statue in a series of evening presentations. Later the Artist S
election Committee recommended, and the Major Taylor Association selected, the design by
Antonio Tobias Mendez of Knoxville, Md.
